Forschungsprojekt Vatikanum II in internationaler Perspektive "Das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil - Erbe und Aufgabe. Internationaler Kommentar der Konzilsdokumente, Ihrer Rezeption und ihrer Weisung für den Weg der Kirche und der Theologie heute"

The aim of the project is the development of an intercontinental and intercultural understanding of the Council, its paradigmatic orientation and motivation for the theologies of the 21st century. The project has not in view a simple reconstruction of the past, the council and the reception up to now. Its emphasis is the future: What are the fundamental options to be taken now, according to letter and spirit of the council? This aim cannot be reached without a thorough new analysis of the Council and of reception on a global scale and on the different continents.

 The precondition for the intercontinental and inercultural development of the Council in the sense of the project is the active history of reception in the different continents and cultural areas. The post-conciliar transformation processes in society, church and theology, in which the Council proved to be a stimulating factor of efficiency, are to be raised. In collegial interactions with experts from the fields of philosophy, economics, social sciences, history and theology, depending on the choice of the study groups, the epochs of the reception process in the continents are differentiated and the responses of the regional churches in Africa, Latin America, North America and Australia, Asia and Pacific and Europe analyzed for the challenges of political, cultural and social transformation processes to determine today`s opening perspectives and upcoming challenges of the signs of the times.

 Contact persons from the steering committee are for Asia and Africa Klaus Vellguth, for Latin America Margit Eckholt, for North America and Australia Peter Hünermann and for Europa and the Roman Curia Joachim Schmiedl. Every study group has its own chair.

The study groups start their work in 2018/2019. The phases of the reception in the cultural areas are raised, important developments, persons and texts are identified, as well as obstacles and deficiencies of an adequate reception are noted. The research will be put together in different workshops in the next years.

The research project receives different supports, also of DFG - Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft gefördert (Antragsteller: Prof. Dr. Joachim Schmiedl; Mitantragstellerin: Prof. Dr. Margit Eckholt).

Im Rahmen des Projekts hat Prof. Dr. Margit Eckholt folgende internationale Tagung durchgeführt: Ein Konzil der Weltkirche - hermeneutische Fragen einer internationalen Kommentierung des 2. Vatikanischen Konzils, gefördert u.a. durch die Thyssen-Stiftung, 16. bis 18. Juni 2019 in Simmern. Im Anschluss an die Tagung fand bis zum 20. Juni ein Workshop statt zur weiteren Entwicklung des groß angelegten Forschungsprojekts. 40 Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen aus Afrika, Asien, Nord- und Südamerika, Australien und Ozeanien sowie Europa diskutierten im Gästehaus Berg Moriah (Simmern im Westerwald) fünf Tage über "Das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil - hermeneutische Fragen." Über den Blick auf die kontinentalen Rezeptionen und die Herausforderung, die eine interkulturelle Relektüre der Konzilstexte darstellt, suchten sie nach neuen Zugängen zu der Bischofsversammlung, die von 1962 bis 1965 im Vatikan getagt hatte. Das Konzil war Aufbruch zu einer neuen Gestalt  der katholischen Kirche als Weltkirche, besonders in der Bewusstwerdung der Eigenständigkeit der Kirchen der südlichen Hemisphäre. Mit dem Pontifikat von Papst Franziskus treten die Herausforderungen verstärkt ins Bewusstsein, die der Abschied von einer westlich-geprägten Gestalt des Katholizismus gerade in den gegenwärtigen Zeiten einer massiven Krise der Autorität der Kirche bedeutet.
